Copper Mountain Superpipe Now Open!

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Copper Mountain Superpipe, photo courtesy Transworld BusinessClass is now in session kids. The Copper Mountain Superpipe will be ruled daily by the US Snowboard Team–and exclusively for that matter–as the team will have uninhibited access from 8:30 - 10:00 a.m. on weekends and 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. on weekdays. The rest of us can witness the team from the sidelines during the early morning sessions, then drop in and catch air (or an edge) once they open the 22 foot behemoth to the public thereafter.

Maybe the earliest-season Superpipe ever, the Copper Mountain monster will be showcased on December 10-12 during the USSA Snowboard Grand Prix when the world’s top riders will be competing for spots on their Olympic teams. Show up at Copper and join the circus (you might catch a glimpse of the red-haired one) from Thursday to Saturday, or just laze around and see the carnage on the boob tube on Sunday, December 13 on NBC at 2:00 p.m. Eastern.

Grind for Life Benefit and 2009 Skatepark Series Awards Ceremony

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009

Grind for Life Benefit -- November 14th -- 2-8pm -- Cocoa Beach SkateparkSaturday November 14th, Pac Sun presents Grind for Life’s 7th Annual Benefit along with the 2009 GFL Skatepark Series Awards Ceremony at the Cocoa Beach Skatepark in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Get out and witness the demo featuring several gnarly pro rulers including Andy Mac and Alex Sargente.

The event runs from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and admission is a mere five bucks for adults and $3 for the kiddies. Of course the money goes to help kids with cancer and their and families during their time of need, so you get to feel good and see some sick riding.

There will also be raffles and a silent auction to help the fundraising efforts, along with live music, food and drinks, and plenty of autograph signing, handshaking and baby-kissing by the pros on hand so if you’re in the Cocoa Beach area, get out there and support Mike Rogers and the good folks at Grind for Life.

Downtown Throwdown Seattle 2009, Occidental Park

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Downtown Throwdown 2009With flurries starting to fly in the Cascades, the Northwest contingent once again kicked off the snow season in style with the 4th Annual Lib Tech/Snowboy Productions Downtown Throwdown. The team from Snowboy set up scaffolding in Seattle’s Occidental Park, just spitting distance from the birthplace of Seattle in Pioneer Square, and with an audience of drunks, bums, homeless dudes and such, a crew of 20 invited riders proceeded to put on a show.

Even though everyone is complaining about tough times and recession hardships, it seems like Lib Tech, Quiksilver and the rest of the sponsors must have dug deep this year anyway, as there were definitely improvements over previous efforts. The setup was quite a bit more professionally rendered than what I’ve seen in the past. And it just looked safer, from a rider’s perspective.

As for those 20 riders, the group included several Throwdown vets and a couple of new faces. Ben Bogart, Chris Brewster, Gus Engle, Austen Sweetin, Forrest Bailey, Austin Hironaka, Ben Bilocq, Ivan Marcinko, Austen Granger, Scott Stevens, Pat Milvery, Johnny Lazz, Jason Robinson, and Nick Visconti all dusted off their boots and brought out their boards for the first time in months, and it looked like there weren’t too many cobwebs to shake off.

Free Goods from Capita and Snowboarder Magazine

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Snowboarder MagazineThe Capita guys unloaded a grip of new gear on the Snowboarder Magazine crew and as a result, you can have a chance to win some free proddy. Basically, if you can string together a haiku, you have a shot at getting your grubby hands on the goods.

Yes, I said a haiku. If you don’t know what a haiku is, you probably don’t have a shot at winning. If you do have some literary chops, or at least a crude sense of humor and the ability to count syllables, you should be in the running.

So put pen to pad and start throwing together your ideas in the form of a japanese poem consisting of 17 moras. Google it people. Then go to the Snowboarder Magazine Free Goods Friday page and enter your awesome work of poetic genius for a chance to ride the schwag wagon.

Quiksilver Slovenia Skate Open, Ljubljana

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Kids who have become complacent about their local skateboard scene should check out this footage from the recent Quiksilver Skate Open in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I’m guessing these kids don’t see ramps of this caliber very often and they definitely make the most of it.

Since Slovenia isn’t exactly the hotbed of up-and-coming pro skaters, you might not recognize Manuel Margreiter, Dominik Dietrich, Timotej Lampe, Ignjič Miha Vogrinčič, Dean Gostimirovič, Tomaž Šantl, Primož Jan and Luka Bizjak as household names. You might be seeing these guys soon though if they keep throwing down this kind of shredding.

Here’s a quote from the producers about the clip. I hope you can read Slovenian: “Na ljubljanskem skateparku se je skozi sončno soboto uspešno odvilo največje tekmovanje v skejtanju pri nas, Quiksilver Slovenija Skate Open.”

For you English-only linguists, here is what the Word Monkey says the quote above translates to: “In Ljubljana skateparku the sun through Saturday successfully taken place in the biggest race in our skejtanju, Quiksilver Skate Slovenia Open.”

Vans Downtown Showdown 2009

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Vans Downtown ShowdownWith all the smooth concrete around here on which the average local contests are held these days–not to mention courses like the Maloof Money Cup and the X-Games where the big-time pro contests are held–it is interesting to note how much goes into putting together a top-tier contest. Case in point, the Vans Downtown Showdown at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood.

Vans brought three teams together and let each one build their epic obstacle. The Girl crew came up with this nice little course called China Girl, a shout to the legendary China Banks in San Francisco. Here’s about ten minutes of footage from the Vans Downtown Showdown as some of the top street skaters in the world battle it out. You can see some on-demand HD footage of the contest in HD at Fuel TV.

Louie Vito on Dancing with the Stars

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

Personally I think Louie looked a bit stiff dancing the Foxtrot with partner Chelsea Hightower. I could go into a detailed rant but I’ve tried to dance the Foxtrot myself and I know from experience it is no easy feat. Even so, the Foxtrot is the first dance they’ll teach you at the Fred Astaire School of Dance.

If you missed Louie’s performance last night, here it is.

Jordy Flip Wins Surfer Magazine Web Video Clip of the Year

Monday, September 21st, 2009

With several mind-blowing clips in the newest Surfer Poll category vying for 2009 supremacy, Jordy Smith takes home the award with his incredible Rodeo Flip. Less than 24 hours after Jordy executed the epic move, the footage was making rounds on YouTube and changing peoples’ perspective on what could be accomplished on a surfboard.

Jordy blows through the lip and explodes into a two-handed rodeo flip, landing it on the top of the wave and pulling it back in smoothly. So gnarly!
