Mike Rogers Talks about Fighting Cancer and Grind For Life

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

Mike Rogers, Grind For Life founderProfessional skateboarder Mike Rogers knows a thing or two about pain. We’re not talking pain from a gnarly bail or a missed trick here. Twice diagnosed with sarcoma, Rogers has endured hours of excruciating surgeries, a brain lift and removal of his right eye, parts of his skull and several teeth. In spite of the traumatic experience, these days Mike Rogers is again skateboarding competitively.

Grind For Life was founded by Rogers in 2003 as a way to help cancer patients and their families with financial assistance when traveling for medical care. The organization provides qualifying families with help covering expenses for travel, food, lodging and personal needs. Grind For Life also provides education and inspiration for families and patients concerning survival and recovery. The organization raises funds through skateboarding contests, demos and events including Florida’s Grind For Life Series.

Inspirational is only one of many adjectives that can be used to describe Rogers. Friendly, outgoing, humble and thoughtful also come to mind. And don’t forget stylish and smooth to describe Mike’s skateboarding talents. Get to know Mike Rogers and his Grind For Life organization in this short video interview courtesy of Hollywood Summit.

Quiksilver Slovenia Skate Open, Ljubljana

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Kids who have become complacent about their local skateboard scene should check out this footage from the recent Quiksilver Skate Open in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I’m guessing these kids don’t see ramps of this caliber very often and they definitely make the most of it.

Since Slovenia isn’t exactly the hotbed of up-and-coming pro skaters, you might not recognize Manuel Margreiter, Dominik Dietrich, Timotej Lampe, Ignjič Miha Vogrinčič, Dean Gostimirovič, Tomaž Šantl, Primož Jan and Luka Bizjak as household names. You might be seeing these guys soon though if they keep throwing down this kind of shredding.

Here’s a quote from the producers about the clip. I hope you can read Slovenian: “Na ljubljanskem skateparku se je skozi sončno soboto uspešno odvilo največje tekmovanje v skejtanju pri nas, Quiksilver Slovenija Skate Open.”

For you English-only linguists, here is what the Word Monkey says the quote above translates to: “In Ljubljana skateparku the sun through Saturday successfully taken place in the biggest race in our skejtanju, Quiksilver Skate Slovenia Open.”

The History of Element: Make it Count, Part 2, Water

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Here’s the second installment of the Element documentary, Make it Count. Director Kirk Dianda followed Johnny Schillereff (Element founder & president) and dug into his history, interviewing the very people that have shaped his life and the company. Here’s the lowdown as told by director Dianda:

“The first incarnation of Element came in the form of a small collaborative, East Coast company called Underworld Element. Most often referred to as Underworld, the company was inspired by the hip-hop movement and used a mixture of urban styles and reflected a raw and controversial vibe.

Soon after its inception, Underworld was plagued with many challenges, and the business began to collapse. Its original crew had all moved on, and Johnny was left with two choices: either turn the struggling brand around, or abandon Underworld altogether and start something entirely new.”

The History of Element: Make it Count

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Element is releasing a four part video documentary of their history, titled Make it Count. Each segment–appropriately designated as Wind, Water, Fire and Earth–is being released on the first day of the month. Part one, Wind was released on August 1st. Water just dropped on October 1st, and we’ll get to see Fire on November 1st followed by Earth on December 1st. Here’s a little bit about the project and Chapter 1 as described by the team at Element:

“MAKE IT COUNT is a four-part documentary, which showcases Element’s defining moments and delves into its compelling story. From its humble beginnings, to a forward thinking global brand, this film covers two decades of stories and imagery.

In creating Chapter 1 of 4, “WIND” Director Kirk Dianda followed Johnny Schillereff (Element founder & president) and dug into his history, interviewing the very people that have shaped his life and the company. The opening and closing sequences give you a small taste of the diverse community of people interviewed for the entire project, topics covered, and nostalgia that was un-earthed.”

Vans Downtown Showdown 2009

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Vans Downtown ShowdownWith all the smooth concrete around here on which the average local contests are held these days–not to mention courses like the Maloof Money Cup and the X-Games where the big-time pro contests are held–it is interesting to note how much goes into putting together a top-tier contest. Case in point, the Vans Downtown Showdown at the Paramount Studios in Hollywood.

Vans brought three teams together and let each one build their epic obstacle. The Girl crew came up with this nice little course called China Girl, a shout to the legendary China Banks in San Francisco. Here’s about ten minutes of footage from the Vans Downtown Showdown as some of the top street skaters in the world battle it out. You can see some on-demand HD footage of the contest in HD at Fuel TV.

Today Was a Good Day Extended Version

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

I always loved the track Today Was a Good Day by Ice Cube. Except for the line about the Lakers beat the Supersonics. One way or the other, the song makes for a nice backing track to some fine skating by P-Rod (and friends) as he hits up some big-time L.A. spots.

Look for a couple of cameos in this clip, and a cleaned-up version of the lyrics (I’m assuming they used the radio edit ‘cuz this ain’t the track I have on mp3). And don’t forget to thanks Nike SB for the sweet footy by splurging for your own pair(s) of P-Rods.
